2023 PLANET for Rural & Regional Planners

The Department of Transport and Planning’s Regional Planning Hub program (RPH) is pleased to be extending the offer for rural and regional council planners to attend PIA PLANET courses to support capability and capacity building.

This offer is open to one course per planner and requests can be made via the RPH portal at .

In the RPH portal, select ‘Request for professional development assistance’ followed by ‘PIA PLANET course’. A separate request will be required for each planner and requires information including the details of the course and your reasons for selecting the course.

Please note that places are limited. In the event that this offer is oversubscribed, the Department may not be able to support all requests and priority will go to planners who have not attended a PIA PLANET course through the previous RPH program support in 2022.

If you need any further information, please reach out to the Regional Planning Partnerships team at regional.planning.hub@delwp.vic.gov.au.

The PIA PLANET program is administered by the Planning Institute Australia (PIA). PLANET provides popular core learning programs and keeps you up to date with legislative, regulatory and policy changes in planning. Programs are added throughout the year and updates will be available here.

Planners play an integral role in shaping the future of our cities, towns and surrounds. Successful development outcomes require planners to have new competencies to enable the advancement of their skills in practice. PIA PLANET provides a comprehensive range of programs that cover six key skill areas in which planners need to be competent, and which match PIA’s Registered Planner pathway. These are:

  1. Professionalism and integrity
  2. Understanding, interpreting and using spatial thinking
  3. Using a creative and integrative approach, drawing on a range of disciplines and methods
  4. Communicating and engaging with stakeholders
  5. Understanding and working with planning frameworks
  6. Developing and applying technical knowledge

Our presenters are subject matter experts who are skilled in facilitating training and providing a positive learning experience to improve your knowledge.

One of the best ways to improve your skills is to become informed of best practice models used by others. Our programs are developed to ensure improved practitioner skills through tailoring practical workshop sessions. The learning model also provides training opportunities to address a range of personal skills gaps for career development.
